Fort Dodge was once a major railroad hub in central Iowa. The Illinois Central Railroad (IC) and Chicago Great Western Railway (CGW) both operated mainlines and terminal facilities in the city; while the Minneapolis & St. Louis Railway operated both a secondary line and a branch line. In addition, the M&StL and Fort Dodge, Des Moines & Southern Railway (FDDM&S) operated several industrial and mine spurs in the area. Today, the former IC line is owned by Canadian National Railway, while the former CGW line and several industrial spurs are owned by Union Pacific Railroad. The remainder of the lines have been abandoned.
