Lakota once had three railroads, including a pair of Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad (Rock Island) secondary lines and a Chicago & North Western Railway (C&NW) secondary line. Today, Union Pacific Railroad owns the former Rock Island west and northeast of the town, while the former Rock Island east of the town and the former C&NW have been abandoned. West of the town, the former Rock Island is largely out-of-service.
