Oelwein was once a major railroad hub in northeast Iowa. The Chicago Great Western Railway (CGW) operated four mainlines, which radiated out from the city. In addition, the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad (Rock Island) operated a branch line through the city. Today, Canadian National Railway operates the former CGW mainline heading southwest from the city, while the remaining lines have been abandoned.
