Newton once had a Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad (Rock Island) mainline, a Rock Island branch line and a Minneapolis & St. Louis Railway (M&StL) branch line. Today, Iowa Interstate Railroad operates the former mainline, while the other lines have been abandoned. In addition, the Fort Dodge, Des Moines & Southern Railway operated an interurban line to the city which was abandoned in the early 20th Century.
