Mitchell once had three railroads, including two branch lines of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway (Milwaukee Road), and a branch line of the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha Railway (Omaha Road). Today, BNSF Railway owns the north-south Milwaukee Road line, as well as the line heading east from Mitchell, while Ringneck and Western Railroad owns the former Milwaukee Road west of Mitchell. The Omaha Road has been abandoned.
