Mendota was once a significant railroad town in north central Illinois, hosting a Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad (CB&Q) mainline and a CB&Q branch line; an Illinois Central Railroad (IC) mainline and a Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad (Milwaukee Road) branch line. Today, the CB&Q mainline is owned by BNSF Railway, while the remaining lines in the city have been abandoned.
