Fairbury once had lines of the Union Pacific Railroad, the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railway and the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad. Today, the UP and portions of the Rock Island are operated by Union Pacific Railroad, while the remaining lines have been abandoned.
