Newton once had a single Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad (Rock Island) mainline, now owned by Iowa Interstate Railroad. In addition, both the Colfax Northern Railway and the Fort Dodge, Des Moines & Southern Railway operated interurban lines to the city which were abandoned in the early 20th Century.
