<p>Between 1881 and 1882, the Little Falls and Dakota Railroad (LF&D) constructed an 88-mile railroad line, extending from an existing railroad line at Little Falls, Minnesota to Morris, Minnesota. The LF&D was operated by the Northern Pacific Railroad, which had constructed and acquired a large railroad network through the north central and northwest United States. The NP was renamed to the Northern Pacific Railway in 1896, and the LF&D was merged into the NP in 1900. This line served as a branch line for the NP, connecting mainly agricultural industries to the mainline at Little Falls. In 1970, NP would merge with rival Great Northern Railway and the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy to form Burlington Northern Railroad (BN). The GN already operated better connections between the Twin Cities and Morris, and this route was quickly deemed excess. In 1972, the segment between Little Falls and Villard was abandoned, followed by the section between Villard and Starbuck in 1981 and the section between Starbuck and Morris in 1983. In 1996, BN merged with the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway to form BNSF Railway. Today, BNSF operates a short section of track in Little Falls, including a bridge over the Mississippi River.</p>
