In 1878, the Waukon and Mississippi Railroad Company (W&M) constructed a short 23-mile branch line from Waukon Junction, Iowa to Waukon, Iowa. The W&M was conveyed to the Chicago, Clinton, Dubuque and Minnesota Railroad (CCD&M) in 1880, which was conveyed to the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway (Milwaukee Road) the same year. By the late 19th Century, the Milwaukee Road had developed a large railroad network throughout the Midwest. This line was one of several branch lines developed in northeast Iowa to serve modest sized towns. The Milwaukee Road was often in financial trouble, especially after the costly Pacific Extension was completed in 1909. In 1925, the company declared bankruptcy, and reorganized as the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad in 1928. In 1970, the entire line was abandoned. Today, much of the line has reverted to adjacent landowners, although several sections of right-of-way are still intact.
