East Saint Louis is a major railroad junction point across the river from St. Louis
. The city currently contains Union Pacific, Norfolk Southern and Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis lines.
In addition, the St. Louis Metrolink also operates a lightrail through the town.
Historically, the town served as a major switch point for all major railroads going into St. Louis. Because this was a major industrial and rail yard area, the town has many relics from the railroad era.
