Spooner was the crossing of two Chicago & North Western branch lines. One went from Hudson to Bayfield, and the other from Eau Claire to Superior. This significant point led to Spooner being known as a railroad town,
as their local High School Mascot is the "Spooner Rails".
The current status of both these lines is limited. The Eau Claire-Superior line is now the Wild Rivers Trail north of Rice Lake. Between Spooner and Hudson, the second line is rather undeveloped. Heading north to Hayward, it is currently a tourist railroad.
