It is named for the Sioux Tribe of Native Americans.
The seat is Orange City, while the largest city is Sioux Center.

Main Highways include US-18, US-75 and IA-10, IA-12 and IA-60.

It borders Lyon, O'Brien and Plymouth Counties in Iowa and Lincoln and Union Counties in South Dakota.
