The Independent City of St. Louis is located in East Central Missouri. It is the second most populated city in Missouri, behind Kansas City. It is named for Louis IX of France.
St. Louis City split from St. Louis County in 1877 over a tax dispute. Since then, it is one of a handful of towns such as this in the United States.
It is bordered by the Mississippi River to the east.
The city borders St. Louis County in Missouri; as well as Madison and St. Clair Counties in Illinois.
Main highways through the county include I-44, I-55, I-64, I-70, US-40, US-50, US-61, Former US-66 and US-67.
