The third largest city in Illinois, Rockford is a distant exurb of Chicago, yet still closely connected to Chicago, Milwaukee and Madison; formerly making it one of the most important cities in Illinois.
The city had several railroads, but only the Illinois Central ran a mainline through town. This is now the Canadian National mainline to Chicago.
The area also featured several spurs, heavy industries and interurban lines. Unfortunately, the area has since slowed down, leading to the abandonment of many of these unique features.
