Mankato and the areas surrounding it had a number of railroads at one time, including main lines of the Chicago & North Western and Omaha Road, and branch lines of the Chicago Great Western and Milwaukee Road.
Today, the two mainlines continue to operate under the Dakota, Minnesota & Easter and Union Pacific, respectively. The other two railroads have been converted to trail use or removed.
