Custer County is located in south western South Dakota. It is named for George Custer, a United States Army officer.
Located in the heart of the Black Hills, the largest city and seat in the county is Custer.
Custer County borders Oennington, Oglala Lakota and Fall River Counties in South Dakota, as well as Niobrara and Weston Counties in Wyoming.
Main highways through the county include US-16, US-385, US-16A, SD-36, SD-40, SD-79, SD-87 and SD-89.
