It has the cottonwood River flow through it. The largest city and the seat is New Ulm.

It borders Nicollet County, Blue Earth County, Watonwan County, Cottonwood County, Redwood County, Renville County

Main highways through the county include US-14, MN-4, MN-15 and MN-68.
